Ana Brooks
Ana Brooks was born in the small town of Mata Ortiz and began her training at age five. A master artisan and educator for more than 35 years, she has shared her craft with hundreds of students and teachers in Granite School District, Southern Utah University, Living Traditions, and Chase Home Museum. She loves serving as a vital link between the ancient history of the Paquimé (Casas Grandes) region and the vibrant Utah arts community. The Mata Ortiz tradition is rooted in the landscape itself — Ana and her family of potters have learned to make pottery from what Mother Earth provides. They go to St.George to the “red clay mountain” and to the Great Salt Lake to get dirt to make clay for their pottery. They very much enjoy putting their efforts in keeping this tradition alive.
Offerings to learners:
Ana can accommodate small or large groups. Under Ana’s guidance, students will learn the painting styles that define this heritage, blending ancestral symbols with contemporary design. Students can handle clay to mold shapes, experiment with painting techniques on dry pieces and learn about the history of Mata Ortiz pottery.
