Artist Bio

Judy Neaman-Mansfield (Yakama/NW Shoshoni) is a retired University Math Instructor, former head start director, and a former Miss Indian BYU, Miss Yakama Nation, and Miss National Congress of American Indians.

Educational Presentations (can be arranged to accommodate different needs):

  1. “I am Sacajawea”/” Contributions of Native Women” (Approx. 30-45 minutes)

Part 1—”I am Sacajawea”: Judy dresses and speaks in the first person as Sacajawea, telling the story of her life. She uses a background screen with green screen effects to visually transport students.

Part 2—”Contributions of Native Women”—Judy does a quick change with clothes designed to flip over to a new modern outfit. She explains the unique talents Native Women possess and uses fiddle-playing and juggling to showcase the talent and traditions from the regions where she has lived. She then highlights the historic contributions of Native Women across the US.

Judy’s son, daughter, and young niece also participate in this presentation.

  1. Native American Legends (Approx. 30 minutes)

Hoop formations and storytelling techniques will inform and entertain students about historic Native American legends. Traditional Regalia, song, dance, and a background screen with green screen effects will enhance the learning experience.

  1. Implementing Storytelling to add understanding to Native Dance demonstrations (Anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes)

Stories and legends will accompany various Native Dances; including hoop dance, traditional men’s and women’s, grass, jingle, spear & shield, and social dances. Traditional handmade Regalia will adorn the performers during this presentation. A background screen with green screen effects enhances the learning experience.

  1. Beading Workshop (3 hours – in one session or up to three separate sessions)

Judy teaches beadwork skills. There are many forms of beadwork, and this class can be adapted to the needs of learning groups of all ages including age-appropriate hands-on projects.

  1. Aligning Native American Beadwork and Native Song/Dance with the Utah State Core Curriculum for Arts (Approx. one hour)

A workshop for educators. Judy will demonstrate how to use Native American crafts (including song/dance) in lesson plans that can align with the Utah State Core Curriculum for the Arts.
