Jack Archibald, Paradigm Shift
Public Art Collection
About the Collection
In 1985, the Legislature passed the Utah Percent-for-Art Act, which designates that 1% of construction costs (capped at $200,000) of new and/or renovated state public buildings is added to the project for the purpose of commissioning, maintaining, and conserving site-specific art at, on, or in the facility. UA&M administers the program to assist and coordinate public art projects with local communities statewide.

Ray King is an accomplished artist whose work explores the natural effects of light and its interaction with glass and optics. The Utah Public Art Program is honored to have five works by Ray King in our collection! Utah Cascade is a light-responsive glass and cable structure suspended in the atrium space of the U of U Health Sciences Education Building. The artwork defines the expansive space with sparkling, chromatic elements that fills but do not occupy the space–creating an elusive, ethereal effect in the environment.
Utah Cascade was installed in the U of U Health Sciences Education Building 20 years ago this year! Be sure to check it out next time you are on the U of U campus.
