ASHLEY CAVES PROJECT

The Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah are justifiably famous for their spectacular scenery, beautiful lakes, extensive forests, and abundant wildlife. But an equally impressive world is hidden below the ground surface in caves developed in limestone bedrock around the margins of the mountain range. Some of these caves are well-known, but many other caves in this region are remote and difficult to access, and they require complicated technical skills to enter safely. Several of these caves were visited in the fall of 2024 by Jeff Munroe, Gabriella Koltai, and Thomas Holmes as part of the “Ashley Caves Project,” a research effort supported by the National Cave and Karst Research Institute and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, focused on understanding how the modern Uinta landscape evolved. The pictures in this exhibition were selected to convey the wonders within these caves.
