This building will become the new primary entrance to the Snow College Richfield campus, and its exterior courtyard is intended to serve both Snow College students and Richfield residents. The Art Selection Committee is searching for exterior work in the entrance courtyard, with the intention to create a “beacon” that welcomes visitors to the site.
Deadline: March 23, 2026
Budget: $100,000

The Art Selection Committee is interested in artwork that aligns with the following categories: exterior sculptural, interior ceiling-suspended installations, or interior wall-hung 2D artworks. Five paintings by Edna Merrill Van Frank now sit i Five paintings by Edna Merrill Van Frank now sit in the new North Capitol Building, where our state collection will be housed. Our division extends heartfelt thanks to our colleagues at the Utah State Capitol Preservation Board, who identified spaces for the murals and coordinated and funded transportation and installation in the North Capitol Building.

These artworks were created in the 1940s as commercial decorations for Auerbach's department store. This rival of ZCMI sold a variety of goods across five floors (and a basement) and was located at the corner of State Street and 300 South. Merrill, as she liked to be known, was a fashion illustrator at the store and was asked to take on the immense task of creating large historic murals to commemorate the Utah Centennial of 1947.

These paintings were generously donated by the Van Frank family to the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection. See them at the Utah State Capitol Campus.

The Utah Public Art program’s first collection add The Utah Public Art program’s first collection addition of 2026 has arrived!

Utah artist Lizzie Wenger’s mural, “Time and Terrain,” can be found at the new State Liquor Store in Moab, Utah. This intricate work primarily depicts Bridger Jack Mesa, which is a sandstone formation located in the Bears Ears National Monument. Viewers will also spot local flora such as rabbitbrush and datura, which hold special significance to the region. The south wall of the mural displays a topographical map of Bridger Jack Mesa.

We would like to express gratitude to the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management, Jacoby Architects, SIRQ Construction, and of course Lizzie Wenger, for all their incredible work and collaboration through this project.

Moving a piece of history is no small feat! 🏛️✨ We Moving a piece of history is no small feat! 🏛️✨ We are so excited to showcase the installation of the Edna Merrill Van Frank mural, a beautiful piece of Utah’s story from 1947, now permanently residing in the new North Capitol Building.

Our division extends heartfelt thanks to our colleagues at the Utah State Capitol Preservation Board, who identified spaces for the murals and coordinated and funded transportation and installation in the North Capitol Building.

This massive project, a 320-inch mural, took a village and lots of heavy lifting. By the numbers, the installation required:

🚛 1 semi-truck and 12 professional movers
🛠️ 100+ feet of straps, 15+ blankets, and 2 dollies
🪜 A grueling trek up 36 total stairs
🎨 18 hours of expert conservation and a 20-foot cleat to hold it all together

After too many sleepless nights, we can safely say: It was all worth it.

See this beauty in person @utstatecapitol!

Special thanks to the team who made this move possible: 🔨 @harrington_art_studio ✨ @mvanfrank and family 🏛️ @utstatecapitol 💪 @baileysmoving 🧤 Yasuko Ogino (Mobile Arts Conservation Services)

The Utah Public Art program is pleased to announce The Utah Public Art program is pleased to announce the commission of two artworks for the upcoming Utah Department of Transportation Region One Maintenance Facility and Materials Lab.

Lenka Konopasek, a painter and mixed media artist, proposed a playful sculptural piece depicting the “infinite” roads of Utah. Highlighting the purpose and importance of UDOT, it will become an iconic marker for the campus. Local signage will also be integrated into the piece in a collaboration between UDOT and the artist.

Andrew Rice designed a bold, colorful mural for the east-facing wall of the Maintenance Facility. The mural depicts iconic machinery used by UDOT employees and utilizes a color scheme meant to complement sunsets over the nearby Great Salt Lake.

We are excited to work with such excellent Utah-based artists, and to be working with UDOT to commission artwork that highlights the vital work that our road crews perform.
