The KUED Kids Writers & Illustrators Contest strives to foster creativity and literacy in young Utah artists and writers. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the new three-part series Chasing the Moon from American Experience, the 2019 theme for the KUED Kids Writers & Illustrators Contest is SPACE! This landmark documentary series is about the space race, from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969. It premiered on KUED in 2019 during the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

This is the 18th year for the Writers & Illustrators Contest. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are encouraged to submit original stories, complete with a minimum of five illustrations. This year, KUED received over 200 submissions from kids and classrooms across the state. This exhibition features the first, second, and third place winners in each grade level (K-6) chosen by a panel of judges including educators, KUED community partners, and arts administrators. Winners recreated a favorite illustration from their story to be included in this special traveling exhibit.
